It was also important to spend some time with Carol as a human on earth, to get a sense of this different life that she once had. Firstly, to establish the story of the scene, which was that the Skrulls are digging through Carol's memories, and making it clear that they are looking for something very specific. Mendelson: What's the thought process of crafting the 'mind-frak' sequence, in terms of narrative and in terms of what sequences to keep and how much to use from each excerpted scene?īerman: There were a multitude of varying iterations of it. But essentially when deciding what to keep, there were a few key things we were aiming for. It was like if mom said no, trying to get dad to say yes!

Mendelson: What was different/interesting/challenging about working with two directors (on Captain Marvel)?īerman: It was really interesting working with two directors (Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck), and not something I have experienced before. Sometimes I missed the intensity of being the director's “first call friend,” but on the other hand it was fun because I got to be a deal breaker if there was something they didn't agree on (which admittedly wasn't too often). Also if I pitched an idea to one of them, and they didn't like it, I would simply go pitch it to the other. So I just stayed true to the story, the tone of the film, and the characters - and the rest took care of itself. Spider-Man: Homecoming is this grounded heartwarming coming-of-age adventure, Black Panther we described almost as a James Bond cross The Godfather with political undertones, and Captain Marvel is an origin story in reverse, set in the 90's, and essentially a grounded big sci-fi action movie. So, editorially I was always just trying to service what best suited that particular film. Mendelson: What choices did you make in order to assure that your three MCU movies ( Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Panther and Captain Marvel) would look and feel different from each other?īerman: Some of those choices were made for me. These are three different stories with different characters that have their own aesthetic, their own genre, directed by different people who each had their own style, and their own film maker signature.

Every time Kevin Feige and the other Marvel execs would come in for an editorial session, I would wear a Captain Marvel t-shirt as my “not so subtle hint” that I was passionate about being a part of Marvel's first female led film. For Captain Marvel I also started canvassing to be a part of that while I was on Homecoming.
